(Second of a series)
How can your mind help you succeed?
In our last post we talked about the outcome frame and the first step to shift to this newer and more productive mental process. We learned that the mind needs conscious guidance from us if we want to it to be helpful and effective in solving problems.
Goal-setting is actually a sequential process of solving different problems. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, you will encounter many challenges before you attain your target weight.
Weight-loss challenges are problems that require adequate solutions. Goal obstacles are also problems, disguised as errors, shortcomings and setbacks. Internal and external problems can greatly affect how you accomplish goals in life.
In order for your mind to actively solve your problems, you need to set a path for it.
How can you create a new path for your mind?
The best way to set a new path your mind is to create a powerful new idea and embed it deep into the subconscious mind. Luckily, this is actually easier than it sounds.
Our imaginations are already situated in the subconscious mind so the ideas you consciously generate can take root in your subconscious mind easily.
To create the first guidepost for your mind, you need to ask yourself:
What do I really want?
Your subconscious mind may not have the answer to this question immediately, but keep trying. Eventually, your next big idea will suddenly pop out from nowhere. Our subconscious mind operates on a much deeper level than the conscious mind so you won’t notice how it generates answers to complex questions.
How can you determine what you really want?
People generally want to succeed with their personal goals because they want to be genuinely happy in the end. Happiness can sometimes be elusive so some people tend to jump from one activity or goal to another in the hopes that they would be able to figure out what really makes them happy.
While it is true that life experiences provide the best “raw material” for our minds, jumping from one goal to the other without accomplishing anything substantial is an expensive, time-consuming way to discover the root of your personal happiness.
Instead of experimenting with half-formed plans and unsound decisions, why not just use daydreaming to help you determine your true path to happiness?
Daydreaming may sound like an unproductive way to spend your time, but it’s actually one of the most effective and direct ways to influence how your mind works.
The brain can’t think for itself – it needs your conscious guidance. The subconscious mind thrives on new ideas and craves for a new, meaningful path to travel.
What is a guided daydream?
Guided daydreaming can provide your mind with a new path to explore. Daydreaming makes use of the brain’s creative pathways that are directly connected with the subconscious mind.
If you perform a guided daydream correctly, you can feed the right information to your subconscious mind. As a consequence it can begin creating plans that will then help you attain true happiness.
How can you perform a guided daydream?
- Visualize
Find a quiet place to visualize and imagine. A room with subdued lights is ideal, though you can perform a guided daydream in a variety of locations, including the public library or in a quiet spot in a nearby park.
- All Aboard!
Close your eyes and imagine that you are now travelling into the future. You are flying into space and into a galactic tunnel with cosmic winds and powerful light that illuminates everything around you. You feel weightless and safe as you travel this tunnel.
- Travel in Style
Command the tunnel to bring you to a future point in time where you are genuinely happy. Set the clock forward a few decades if you want! The cosmic tunnel in your imagination may bend or twist as it prepares you for landing.
- Explore
When you’re ready, ask the tunnel to make the stop. When you feel safe to leave the tunnel, enter the future time and place. Look around you and explore where you landed.
Look for familiar faces and take note of what people are doing. What do you look like? What do you do for a living at this point in time? Who are the familiar faces that are there for you in the future time?
- Homecoming
When you are finished exploring the future time, say goodbye and call upon the cosmic tunnel to bring you home. Board the tunnel and let it take you back gently to the present time. Wake up gently from the guided daydream and write down important things that you’ve learned.
- The Final Step
The sixth and final step is also the most important of them all: start taking action!
